MULTICOLOUR DOUBLE WRAP PATOLA TISSUE SILK The word ‘Ikat’ is derived from ‘mengikat’, a Malay-Indonesian word meaning ‘to tie’. In simple terms, ‘Ikat’ means ‘to bind’. In this process, beautiful designs in the fabric are created by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven. An apparent “blurriness” to the design is a defining feature of Ikat fabrics. The weaver’s tremendous difficulty aligning the dyed strands so that the design appears correctly in the completed cloth is the cause of the blurriness.
